The Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Gregory Andrews, says the abuse of old women accused of witchcraft in parts of the Northern region is un-Ghanaian and therefore government should take steps to eliminate the practice.

He noted that Ghana holds an enviable reputation globally as a nation that respects human rights while the nation has also carved a niche for its hospitality and expressed concerns that issues of witchcraft could mar the nation’s reputation.

The High Commissioner made these remarks when he addressed journalists at the so called Gnani witches camp in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region.

The High Commissioner explained that, the recent lynching of a ninety-year-old woman at Kafaba was an unfortunate incident that must not be repeated.

He said the Australian High Commission will partner the government of Ghana and civil society organisations such as Actionaid to raise awareness on the issue and seek global support to eliminate the canker.

Meanwhile, there appears to be no end in sight for witchcraft accusations despite condemnation of the practice.

GBC’s Radio Ghana has learnt that new cases of accused witches have been recorded at Gnani. Actionaid, an international NGO, has called for the total disbandment of the camps and reintegration of all inmates.
