The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has revealed the government’s decision to reconstruct the statue of the Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, which was reportedly destroyed on Sunday, July 13, during a military operation in the Kusaug Traditional Area.

He highlighted that this will be taken care of while investigations into the incident continue.

Speaking on the Government Accountability Series, the Minister mentioned that Ghana is a safe, stable, and peaceful country, ready to experience a golden age under the reset agenda of President Mahama.

“The Ghana Armed Forces continue to ensure Ghana’s territorial integrity through coordinated land, maritime, and air operations. While the overall internal and external security of Ghana remains stable, we acknowledge that the situation in Bawku and Alavanyo and their immediate surroundings remains quite volatile,” he said.

Dr. Omane Boamah reiterated that the Ghana Armed Forces are actively monitoring developments and have put in place robust mechanisms to ensure any potential escalation is swiftly contained in the interest of a peaceful and long-lasting resolution of the conflicts through dialogue.

He further stated that crime would be separated from traditional matters, enabling the government to deal appropriately and legally with criminals who foment trouble in the name of chieftaincy conflicts.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga condemned the destruction of the statue, describing it as “unacceptable”. He demanded immediate investigations by the military high command into the incidents that occurred on July 13, while also criticizing the violent attack by unknown assailants on a vehicle being escorted by soldiers.

The situation remains volatile, with NDC executives in the Bawku enclave threatening to suspend all party activities and resign if the government does not take immediate action to resolve the conflict.
