Ahead of the highly anticipated Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session in Brussels, Belgium, President John Dramani Mahama engaged in a series of high-level bilateral meetings aimed at bolstering global health partnerships and vaccine equity.
Among the key engagements was a meeting with Gavi Board Chair and former European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso.

Mr. Barroso commended President Mahama for his steadfast support of Gavi’s vaccine replenishment efforts, noting the Alliance’s appreciation for his longstanding advocacy.

President Mahama also held a separate meeting with American philanthropist and billionaire, Mr. Bill Gates.

The pledging session in Brussels aims to secure critical funding for Gavi’s next phase of work, which will support immunization efforts across the developing world from 2026 to 2030.
President Mahama is attending the session in his capacity as an ambassador for the GAVI Alliance’s vaccine replenishment efforts.
The summit, co-hosted by the European Union, the Gates Foundation, and the Vaccine Alliance, aims to rally critical support for Gavi’s 2026–2030 strategy. The plan targets the immunisation of 500 million additional children, the saving of over 8 million lives, and protection against up to 150 disease outbreaks—delivering projected economic benefits exceeding $100 billion.
