The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, has announced that Ghana and China have signed a US$30 million grant agreement to support the construction of a new university in Damongo in the Savannah Region.

The minister made this known in a Facebook post on Tuesday, January 2026, after meeting the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, earlier in the day. He described the visit as an important moment in the long-standing bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to the Finance Minister, the grant reflects the strong cooperation between Ghana and China, especially in the areas of education and development.

Dr. Forson thanked Ambassador Tong Defa, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana, for his dedication and efforts in strengthening Ghana–China relations during his tenure.

He also stressed the need to reduce exchange rate losses in trade between the two countries, noting that it would be beneficial for Ghana and China to increasingly conduct trade using their local currencies.

Dr. Forson wished the outgoing ambassador well in his future assignments and expressed confidence that relations between Ghana and China would continue to grow stronger.
