Panelists on our Current Affairs Programme “FOCUS” have raised concerns over what they described as the reintroduction of the Criminal Libel Law which was repealed more than two decades ago.
This follows the arrest of some journalists and individuals making unguarded statements. The panelists were of the view that although journalists and Civil Society Organisations are not above the law, the style of arrest and detention is worrying.
MP for Builsa North and Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, James Agalga was of the view that the pronouncements made by Convener of the Fix the Country Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor is not enough for him to be convicted and charged with treason felony. He pointed out that the state should determine whether Oliver Baker-Vormawor has the capacity to stage a coup before charging him with treason.
Defence and Security Analyst, Dr. Prosper Nii Nortey Addo, shared similar sentiments. He said some terrorist groups operating in the sub-region may be lingering around, waiting for chaos so they react. This, he said, can be curtailed if issues of threats of coup are handled with circumspection.
Editor in Chief of the Fourth Estate, Manasseh Azure Awuni, who joined the discussions via phone, was unhappy about political considerations in the issuance of radio frequencies by the National Communications Authority.
