A government investigation has uncovered 2,637 containers meant for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that had previously gone unaccounted for—more than double the 1,300 containers initially reported missing.
The discovery was made during a probe at the Tema Port by a joint committee comprising representatives from National Security, the Ministry of Transport, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), and Customs.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, confirmed the findings in an interview with 3News.
As of April 30, 2025, 860 containers were found at Meridian Port Services, 1,237 at GPHA Terminals, 272 had already been removed by National Security, 194 were located at Amaris Terminal, and 20 were found at the ATLAS Manufacturing Terminal.
Further checks revealed that 2,437 of these containers had remained at the port beyond the allowed 60-day clearance period, resulting in significant demurrage (storage penalty) fees.
As a result, ECG is expected to work with port authorities to settle these charges.
The Chief of Staff has also directed that all located containers be moved to ECG’s secure warehouses, and that a complete inventory of their contents be recorded.
