COVID-19: Enforce directive on lockdown tactfully – CHRAJ tells security personnel

The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, CHRAJ, has called on security officials enforcing the President’s directive on the partial lockdown to do so humanely, tactfully and professionally, giving regard to the rights and dignity of citizens.

CHRAJ says the exercise of the powers conferred on the COVID-19 Security Taskforce, should be consistent with the 1992 Constitution as well as International and Regional Human Rights laws and Normative Framework.

Speaking on news and current affairs programme ‘Behind the News’ on GBC’s Uniiq FM, Commissioner of CHRAJ, Joseph Whittal said videos on social and traditional media of the excesses of the taskforce are disturbing.

Mr Whittal said personnel of the taskforce should consider the context under which exemptions are applicable and grant pass to the citizenry where necessary.

While commending government and the taskforce for ensuring public safety, Mr Whittal said a lot of Ghanaians do not know much about the law and the ordinary person may not have enough information about the lockdown.
