The Ashanti South Regional Police Command says it has foiled a planned robbery operation after receiving intelligence that a gang of armed robbers had gathered in a bush along the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta stretch to target commuters.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the police said a team acted on the intelligence on 31 December 2025 and encountered four armed suspects. According to the police, the suspects opened fire and attempted to flee when confronted, prompting officers to return fire.

Two of the suspects, later identified as Usmaro Mohammed and Yaw Frimpong, also known as Nana Yaw, sustained gunshot injuries and were pronounced dead on arrival at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital. The other two suspects escaped into the bush.

Police said a search of the scene recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with 15 rounds, a pump-action gun loaded with four BB cartridges, four spent cartridges, a black bag containing 16 live cartridges, and a Toyota VOXY believed to have been used by the suspects in their operations.

The police added that the suspects are linked to several robberies in Manso and Obuasi, including incidents at Mpohor gold site, Nyinahini highway, and a cocoa shed in Sefwi. Preliminary investigations indicate the gang had accomplices operating in Mankranso, Tamale, and Brekum, who remain at large.

The police said investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and to establish the ownership of the impounded vehicle.
