Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Jinapor, has revealed that the newly inaugurated Board of the debt-ridden Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has terminated 202 contracts valued at $227 million out of the over 349 contracts entered into by the previous administration.

According to the Energy Minister, the current board is subjecting the remaining 147 contracts to strict scrutiny and may be terminated depending on the findings.

The Energy Minister revealed this during an encounter with the press at the Government Accountability Series, an initiative by the Government Communication Bureau, on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the seat of government, the Flag Staff House.

“The ECG Board has approved the outright termination of over 202 of these contracts. The total values of these contracts are estimated at $227 million, 1.17 million pounds, and 4.08 million Euros. We are determined to ensure that we clean up the sector,” Mr. Jinapor assured.

“The 347 supply contracts that have failed to deliver goods within the specific areas are up for review. The goods in these containers were not part of the materials locked up at the port; these are new containers coming up following procurements which were undertaken previously,” he reiterated.

According to him, the John Mahama-led government is spending 30% to 40% less than what was spent in 2024 by the previous Akufo-Addo government in terms of procurement.

“We are achieving better results with value for money and ensuring that we adhere to strict procurement processes,” the Minister stressed.

Mr. Jinapor emphasised that government will not be engaged in the kind of ‘reckless’ procurement undertaken by the previous government.
