Residents and businesses in Cape Coast and surrounding communities in the Central Region will experience a planned power outage today, Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., as authorities undertake a major upgrade at the Cape Coast Substation.
In a press release dated January 6, 2026, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), announced that the interruption is necessary to replace an existing 33MVA transformer with a new 66MVA transformer at the substation.
According to the Ministry, the upgrade is part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen and expand Ghana’s national power transmission infrastructure. The replacement is expected to significantly increase the substation’s capacity, enable more households and businesses in Cape Coast and its environs to connect to the national grid, and improve the overall quality, reliability, and stability of power supply in the area.
GRIDCo engineers, operating under the strict supervision of the Ministry, have put in place all necessary measures to ensure the work is completed efficiently and within the scheduled timeframe, allowing for the prompt restoration of power supply.
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and GRIDCo have expressed regret over any inconvenience the planned outage may cause and have assured the public of their continued commitment to supporting national development through reliable and improved electricity delivery.
The statement was signed by Richmond Rockson, Esq., Spokesperson and Head of Communication at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
