The Ministry of Energy has explained that the recent power outages in parts of Accra are due to the launch of a major transformer upgrade project being undertaken in collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to improve power supply and reliability.

The Ministry is therefore urging the public to exercise patience as the works continue.

The initiative forms part of broader government and ECG efforts to ease network congestion, reduce recurring power cuts, and strengthen electricity distribution in growing urban areas.

In an interview with Joy News, the Spokesperson and Director of Communications at the Energy Ministry, Richmond Rockson, said:

“We ask the public to kindly bear with the government and the Electricity Company of Ghana as these transformer upgrade works are implemented. Although there will be temporary power interruptions, these improvements are necessary for a more reliable and resilient power supply in the long term.”

The exercise, which began on Wednesday, April 7, is focused on key substations and surrounding communities, including Adenta, La, Teshie–Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi, where residents may experience temporary power interruptions during the upgrade.

ECG plans to roll out the project in phases to minimise service disruptions, although outage durations will vary depending on the location and the scale of work required.

The Ministry and ECG have assured the public of their commitment to completing the project efficiently while minimising inconvenience.

Residents have also been advised to follow ECG communication channels for updates and schedules to better plan their activities.
