President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need for structural reforms in the country’s public sector, particularly in the pension system.
Speaking at a dialogue with organized labour on Tuesday, March 17, President Mahama said: “The goal is to ensure every Ghanaian worker retires with dignity, security, and confidence in the pension system.”
He explained that the government plans to establish a new Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, which will serve as an independent body to manage public sector pay.
“The commission will create a transparent, rules-based, and evidence-driven system for setting public sector pay, guided by productivity, labour market realities, and fiscal sustainability,” he stated.
The reform will be implemented in phases, with full consultation with organized labour.
President Mahama also noted that the current pension system covers fewer than 2 million workers out of an estimated 10 million, with assets of approximately 100 billion Ghana cedis, representing about 7% of GDP.
