Female journalists say women bring empathy and credibility to reporting on sensitive issues such as sexual harassment and gender-based violence, but they also face unique challenges in the digital space.

Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on August 21, 2025, during a discussion themed “Women in Media: Stories Only She Can Tell,” broadcast journalist Hannah Dadzie of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation said female victims often feel more comfortable confiding in women journalists.

“We can have a man tell a sexual harassment story, but the woman’s perspective will be different because the victim tends to trust the woman,” She said. “There are some things I can share with a woman I can’t share with a man if I am a rape victim.”

Seli Baisie, a journalist and editor with GBC Online, also addressed the importance of women’s representation in all media spaces, particularly digital. She said women are better able to tell stories about issues they have lived through.

She also added women representation especially on online spaces is an avenue where women can use their lived experiences to speak on issues affecting other women.

She cautioned, however, that female journalists frequently encounter backlash and negative comments that make them second-guess content before publishing even though the content is important.
