Four months ban on hunting comes into effect tomorrow

The Forestry Commission has banned the hunting and capturing of wild animals effective tomorrow (July 31) to December 1.

The close season is to give respite to the animals to enable them to breed. The ban does not affect grasscutter hunting.

Announcing the ban in Accra, the Deputy Chief Executive, Forestry Commission, John Allotey appealed to the  public and hunters in particular to observe the four months moratorium.

Mr. Allotey who mentioned some of the animal species that are wholly protected and shall not be hunted, captured or destroyed by any person at anytime said studies have shown that the four months ban have been fruitful.

He and other officials toured the zoo in the Achimota Forest.

The Wildlife Conservative Regulations Legislative Instrument 685 of 1971 stipulates that during this period, the hunting, capturing or destroying of any wildlife species is absolutely prohibited.

The only animal that could be hunted during the close season is the grasscutter but with a valid license issued by the Wildlife Division.

Persons who contravene any provision of these regulations shall be guilty of an offence liable on summary conviction to a fine.
