The Director-General of the National Patrol Department (NPD), COP Alhaji Mohammed Suraji, says drug abuse is no longer limited to marijuana, popularly known as wee, but has now expanded to include dangerous substances such as “red,” tramadol, cocaine, and other narcotics.
Speaking at the Hausa Youth Ghana Annual Lecture on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, COP Alhaji Mohammed Suraji, expressed deep concern over the growing menace of drug abuse within Zongo communities, warning that the trend threatens both public safety and the reputation of the community.
He said some youth openly consume these drugs and then parade the streets in unruly fashion, dancing and disturbing public peace.
“If I had engaged in drugs, I would not be where I am today. Drugs destroy destinies. We must all work together to protect our future,” COP Suraji said.
He appealed to Islamic leaders and the wider Muslim community to intensify education campaigns against illegal drug use, emphasizing that the police have already begun sensitization efforts in some Zongo communities.
He further urged the youth to cooperate with the Ghana Police Service in the fight against drugs, stressing that eliminating the menace would not only save lives but also protect the good name of the Hausa and Zongo communities in Ghana.
