The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has ordered the immediate suspension of construction works on a new structure near the overpass close to the East Legon Police Station, citing concerns over public safety and violations of spatial planning regulations.

The directive follows an unscheduled site inspection conducted earlier on Monday by the Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, accompanied by a technical team, after concerns were raised about the location of the ongoing development. According to the Minister, personnel at the site claimed the project was supported by a valid permit.

However, preliminary assessments revealed that the positioning of the structure poses serious concerns regarding encroachment on the right-of-way and potential obstruction of critical public infrastructure.

As a result, three immediate directives were issued. All construction activities at the site have been halted with immediate effect. Developers have also been instructed to dismantle any existing framework and remove all construction materials from the area. In addition, the Municipal Chief Executive of the relevant assembly has been formally engaged to initiate the reversal and revocation of any permits allegedly issued for the site.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing strict adherence to spatial planning and urban development regulations across the region. The council warned that it will not tolerate developments that compromise public safety or undermine the standards required for orderly urban expansion.

Authorities further stressed the need to preserve public spaces and called on all stakeholders to fully cooperate as enforcement actions are carried out to protect the integrity of urban planning in the capital.
