Chairperson of the National Media Commission (NMC), Professor Akua Biritwum, has advised the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to prioritise content that reflects Ghanaian values and promotes national development.

Speaking at the 90th Anniversary Lecture of GBC on Thursday, 31 July 2025, Professor Biritwum emphasised the importance of GBC’s role as a public broadcaster.

“Your celebration is not just an acclamation of what you have achieved, but you also must bear in mind that you want to position yourself to remain relevant and credible to your original mandate,” she stated.

Professor Biritwum highlighted the need for GBC to produce content that educates and mobilises Ghanaians towards national goals, particularly development. “It is your duty to point out where we can go and how we can do it,” she added.

On the issue of content, she stressed the importance of Ghanaianness and Africanness, saying, “The other is the Ghanaianness and the Africanness of your content.”

She also urged GBC to uphold standards and values in the face of challenges posed by the commodification of news. “The future holds challenges. We know the commodification of news and what it brings to you, and your challenge is to uphold standards and values and avoid sensationalism, which brings short-term rewards,” she stated.

Professor Biritwum expressed optimism about GBC’s future, saying, “I am certain that it will be a drive that brings everybody together.” She encouraged GBC to recognise its past and what it brings to the present, as it seeks to rejuvenate and shed outdated practices.
