Renowned journalist and current Director of Television at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Akushika Acquaye, shared heartfelt reflections on her journey with the broadcaster as it marks 90 years of impactful service in Ghana’s media landscape. 

Her comments highlighted the deep personal and professional ties she has developed with GBC, describing it as a family that has shaped her life and career.

She spoke about the meaningful beginnings of her path at GBC, emphasizing gratitude for the opportunities and mentorship she received. 

“When somebody gives you a spoon of water or a teaspoon of water and shows you the ropes, you don’t turn your back,” she said, illustrating her loyalty and affection for the institution. 

She likened her experience to being part of a larger family, past, present and future generations at GBC reflecting the broadcaster’s lasting legacy and influence on many lives.

Addressing the importance of maintaining GBC’s impact and voice, the Director of Television Madam Akushika Acquaye challenged workers involved with corporation to consider their role seriously. “What kind of impact have we made in the past and do we still have it? That impact, that voice. We do have the voice,” she affirmed. 

She acknowledged the challenges that come with the pressures of life but reminded her colleagues that integrity and commitment to the audience must come first when delivering news and stories.

She shared a touching story that underscored the power of broadcasting to positively affect lives. After a breakfast show, she was told a caller was genuinely moved by what she had said, inspiring them to start their day with hope. 

“We have a lot of impact on our audience that we cannot really begin to comprehend,” she said, encouraging current broadcasters to be authentic and truthful in their work, because their words reach and resonate far beyond the studio walls.

With a steadfast belief in the value of honest storytelling and service to the nation, she concluded with a reminder: “When you are doing it, do it with your all.”
