The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s three-day visit to Ghana was aimed at deepening bilateral relations, expanding trade, and strengthening cooperation in education, renewable energy, and youth skills development.

Speaking at the Presidency after bilateral talks with President John Dramani Mahama, President Steinmeier commended Ghana’s vibrant democracy and active role in regional mediation and cooperation, describing the country as a key partner for Germany in West Africa.

50 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION

President Steinmeier noted that Ghana and Germany share a long-standing partnership that has endured since Ghana’s independence. This year marks 50 years of formal development cooperation between the two nations.

He said both countries continue to lay the foundation for sustainable economic growth that benefits their people. Germany, he added, will this year provide over €65 million (approximately ₵823 million) in development support to Ghana, subject to parliamentary approval in Berlin.

BOOSTING TRADE AND INVESTMENT

Highlighting Ghana’s economic potential, President Steinmeier described the country as an attractive investment destination and regional business hub.

He revealed that trade between the two countries grew by over 25 percent last year, reaching €626 million, with opportunities to further expand.

Accompanied by a delegation of major German companies specializing in infrastructure, construction, and high technology, the German leader expressed optimism that Ghana’s skilled workforce, stable democracy, and strategic location make it ideal for investment and regional trade expansion.

STRENGTHENING BILATERAL AND REGIONAL DIALOGUE

The two leaders agreed to hold regular high-level political consultations to enhance collaboration on bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.

President Steinmeier reiterated Germany’s recognition of Ghana’s leadership in regional peace efforts and its role as a stabilizing force in West Africa.
