Residents along the Tamale–Bolgatanga highway on Monday witnessed a significant military presence as a convoy of buses and armored vehicles moved toward the Upper East Region. The deployment, which drew the attention of onlookers in several towns including Tamale, Savelugu, Diare, Nasia and Walewale, is part of a new military initiative known as “Exercise SAAGUGA GUGDA”.
According to sources within the Northern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, the exercise is a strategic component of Operation MAAIDA BUURI, which aims at bolstering internal security and enhancing counter-insurgency preparedness in northern Ghana.
The troop movements and operations are expected to impact several key communities, including Sandema, Tilli, Pusiga-Polmakom and Bawku which has experienced intermittent security concerns recently.
Military officials have not publicly disclosed the specific duration of the operation or the number of personnel involved, but insiders said it is a robust and precautionary measure to deter potential threats and ensure a state of high readiness.

Some residents along the highway have expressed a mix of relief and curiosity, welcoming the presence of security forces while seeking clarity on the long-term goals of the operation.
The Ghana Armed Forces have in recent years intensified collaboration with local authorities and regional partners to safeguard border communities, particularly as the wider West African sub-region continues to grapple with growing militant threats.
Apart from the growing threat of violent extremist organizations in the Sahel, a longstanding Chieftaincy conflict in Bawku continues to cause concerns among stakeholders. On Saturday, two students of the Nalerigu Senior High School were killed in what security chiefs believe to have connections to the conflict in Bawku.
The Interior Ministry on Sunday, imposed a 2pm to 6am curfew on the North East Regional capital and reviewed an existing curfew in Bawku from 2pm to 6am.
Authorities are urging the public to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel during the exercise, which is expected to include routine patrols, community engagement, and simulation drills.
