The Government of Ghana has ordered the immediate closure of its embassy in Tehran due to intensifying hostilities between Iran and Israel.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision in a social media update on Monday, 16 June, emphasizing that the move is aimed at protecting the lives of Ghanaian citizens.

“The Mahama administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr. Ablakwa posted.

“To guarantee the safety of our embassy staff, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been closed with immediate effect,” he added.

According to the minister, evacuation efforts are already underway through Iran’s land borders. These efforts will cover all Ghanaian nationals currently in the country, including diplomats, students, and professionals.

He gave assurances that “every effort is being made to ensure the safe passage of all affected persons.”

Mr. Ablakwa also noted that the government is actively monitoring developments in Israel and may implement additional measures if necessary.

“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he stated.

The Ghanaian government reaffirmed its appeal for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict, stressing its commitment to the safety and welfare of its citizens.
