Today is World Environment day. It is a day set by the UN in 1973 to raise awareness and educate the public about emerging environmental issues.

The objective is to also accelerate, amplify and engage people, communities and governments around the world to take action on critical environmental challenges facing the planet.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the day and it is being observed under the global theme “Solutions to plastic pollution“ in Côte D’Ivoire.

A statement signed by the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency and other stakeholders called for collaboration in dealing with plastic menace in view of health and environmental threat.

He said Ghana is observing the day with the slogan “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Dr Kwaku Afriyie mentioned the government’s effort at addressing the menace in collaboration with the private sector and donor partners in recycling plastics, especially single-use ones.

He called on all to undertake clean-up exercises and adopt measures to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover waste.
