Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Government of China to support the construction of a modern market in Aflao, in line with President John Mahama’s campaign promise during the 2024 electioneering campaign.

The signing ceremony which took place on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscores a significant boost to the nation’s economic infrastructure and cross-border trade.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while His Excellency Tong Defa, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, represented the Chinese Government.

In a Facebook Post, Mr Ablakwa, said this latest grant follows a similar Chinese-funded initiative during the Mills/Mahama administration that led to the construction of the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast, a project widely praised for its modern design and economic impact.

The planned Aflao market is expected to be a transformative infrastructure project for the Volta Region, enhancing cross-border trade between Ghana and Togo. It is strategically positioned to link the Ho and Lomé markets, stimulate local commerce, and improve livelihoods in the region, which serves as a key trading hub in West Africa.

“For God and Country,” Mr Ablakwa stated, emphasizing the national importance of the project.
