Ghana seeks justice for deceased student as Latvia confirms January 20 meeting

Latvia has agreed to receive Ghanaian delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on January 20, 2026, to discuss the ongoing investigation into the death of Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia, who died under suspicious circumstances in Riga, Latvia. 

Mr Ablakwa confirmed this development in a Facebook post today, stating that the delegation will include representatives of Nana Agyei’s family to ensure transparency and direct family involvement in the process.

“On the matter of ongoing investigations and justice for Nana Agyei, I can confirm that the Latvian Foreign Ministry has officially responded to my request and indicated that Latvian authorities shall be ready to receive my delegation in Riga, Latvia on the 20th of January, 2026. Looking forward to embarking on this important journey in the pursuit of truth and justice”, he wrote. 

He also indicated that, just as he promised he would, he is working hard to provide regular updates in the interest of transparency, accountability and Justice adding that, the Mahama administration values every Ghanaian life either at home or abroad and is prepared to do whatever it takes to safeguard the dignity of all Ghanaians.

The Ghanaian government is committed to pursuing justice for Nana Agyei, and the delegation’s visit aims to engage with Latvian authorities and gather more information on the case. The family has been pushing for a thorough and independent investigation.

Nana Agyei, an 18-year-old Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University, was found dead on June 4, 2025, after allegedly falling from his apartment building’s sixth floor. However, his family disputes this account, pointing to a voice note he sent three days prior claiming he had been poisoned.
