The Ministry of Roads and Highways has promised to remove all unauthorised speed humps and replace them with appropriate speed calming measures such as raised islands and the use of road line markings to narrow road width at appropriate sections of the road on major roads to reduce many avoidable accidents.

The Ministry has also planned, as a long-term measure, to install Speed Cameras at highway sections, which go through settlements in collaboration with the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service.

The Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, who was responding to a question posed by Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, MP for Keta, as to what plans the Ministry has to check the indiscriminate construction of unauthorised speed ramps on the major roads and highways in the country, said “these measures together will help curb the indiscriminate construction of unauthorised speed humps and promote safer road conditions for all road users”.

According to him, unauthorised speed humps pose significant safety hazard to motorists, leading in some cases to accidents and vehicle damage. To address this problem, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has adopted the above plans to deal with the situation, “engagement with key stakeholders like the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to enforce speed limits on the major roads and highways and collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to raise awareness among road users about safe speeds and responsible road user behaviour”.
