While some propose new gun legislation, experts argue that beyond laws, practical interventions such as community-based initiatives, security measures, socio-economic reforms, and stronger partnerships are needed to curb the spread of arms.
Research suggests that student-led peace clubs in schools could be effective in promoting non-violence and conflict resolution. O’Reilly Senior High School in Accra is cited as a successful example, with experts recommending replication nationwide to empower young people as ambassadors of peace.
Community engagement is also highlighted as key, with peace advocates urging stronger involvement of local communities, civil society organisations and faith-based groups in raising awareness about the dangers of gun violence.
Security strategies
Experts call for a strengthened arms-tracking system to help law enforcement agencies monitor and control illicit weapons. Improved record-keeping, surveillance and intelligence gathering are recommended, along with secure firearm storage to prevent unauthorised access.
Socio-economic interventions
The research emphasises addressing the root causes of gun violence, such as poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Proposed solutions include job creation, economic empowerment programmes, and enhanced social welfare services. Supporting at-risk youth through mentorship, education, skills training, and counselling is also considered vital.
Collaboration and partnerships
Experts stress the importance of inter-agency collaboration among security services, law enforcement and civil society groups to share intelligence and resources. International cooperation with organisations like the UNDP is also encouraged to provide expertise, funding and long-term support.
