Executive Secretary for the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), Dr. Gameli Kewuribe Hoedoafia, has emphasised the importance of citizens taking an active role in their local governance by familiarising themselves with their local government areas.

According to him, citizens must take personal responsibility for governance arrangements and participate in local decision-making processes.

“People should be interested in the local government of their area. Some people do not even know their local government area,” he stressed.

Speaking in an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show on August 25, 2025, he urged Ghanaians to review the Auditor-General’s report to understand how allocated resources are being utilised.

“You should take a look at the Auditor-General’s report and locate your area and find out how the resources allocated there are being used,” he said.

According to Dr. Hoedoafia, decentralisation aims to bring governance closer to the people, enabling them to lead the development of their own spaces.

He added that Ghana has seen a significant increase in districts, from 110 in 1988 to 261 today, demonstrating the progress of decentralisation.

He also revealed that districts currently have access to 5% of internally generated funds, which can be used for local development projects.

By understanding local governance and participating in the development process, citizens can contribute to the effective implementation of decentralisation policies and improve their communities.
