Morocco has doubled the number of scholarships for Ghanaian students this year from 70 to 140, following a recent diplomatic mission led by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. However, Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil, says the increase is still not sufficient.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show on 4 August 2025, the ambassador remarked:
“It’s a very good thing, although I’m not very satisfied about this number… We need to increase it.”
She explained that initially there was an agreement for 70 scholarships and 20 additional slots for vocational training, making a total of 90, but the figure has since been increased.
The ambassador confirmed that her office has already received the list of successful applicants from the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and has begun processing them.
She also revealed that Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with Morocco to launch a student exchange programme that would allow Moroccan students to study in Ghana. She described this as a valuable opportunity for cultural and linguistic exchange.
“In Morocco, the second language is French. So English sometimes comes third or fourth,” she said. “I think an immersion in Ghana’s education system would go a long way toward giving a good impression for the Moroccan students.”
Ambassador Ouaadil noted that Morocco has been running scholarship programmes for Ghanaian students since 2002. So far, more than 520 Ghanaian students have graduated from Moroccan institutions.
“Currently, we have 172 students in different universities and they have graduated in engineering, medicine, law, and other specific skilled diplomas,” she said.
She added that the Moroccan Embassy maintains strong ties with the Association of Former Students, many of whom continue to stay connected with Morocco both personally and professionally.
“They really feel attached to the country and the culture,” she noted.
The ambassador reiterated Morocco’s commitment to strengthening educational cooperation with Ghana and supporting future initiatives to expand scholarship opportunities.
