The Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, GIS, Samuel Basintale Amadu, has paid a working visit to the Immigration officer, AICOII Oppong Daniel, who was injured in the Gbintiri Checkpoint attack, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. AICOII Oppong Daniel was with Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed, now deceased, when they were attacked last month by unknown Armed men at their duty post at Gbintiri.
He is currently receiving medical treatment at the Hospital after an initial care at the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
The Immigration boss’s visit was to provide support and condolences to the officer and his family during his recovery.
The North East Regional Police Command commenced investigations into an armed attack on the two Immigration Service personnel stationed at the Gbintiri Inland checkpoint near Nalerigu which led to the death of one officer. The incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, when unknown gunmen launched an assault on the officers.
According to the North East regional police command, both officers sustained gunshot wounds, but sadly, Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICOII) Rafiq Mohammed died from his injuries while AICOII Oppong Daniel was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The attackers made away with a motorbike and a bag belonging to the officers. However, the police managed to retrieve a service rifle that had been in use at the checkpoint during the attack.
A full-scale manhunt was launched to track down the perpetrators.
During his visit, Mr. Basintale provided support and condolences to the injured officer and his family, assuring them of the GIS’s commitment to providing the necessary medical care and support.
Speaking to journalists after the visit, Mr. Basintale emphasized the GIS’s commitment to retooling various checkpoints with the needed logistics to enhance security as well as beefing up security at duty posts.
“He has remarkably improved and he has been able to speak to me. We exchanged pleasantries and he was hearty to see us around. The Police has picked an intel but we do not want to preempt anything, we have left that with the police and our intelligence unit. At the appropriate time there will be pronouncement on how investigations have progressed.” He noted.
He said “Security is an issue especially in the Northern enclave but I want to assure that everything is being done to retool them, arm them and provide the needed logistics to beef up security and if we need to bring in more men, that will be done because of what is happening in the Sahel region”.
The Ghana Immigration boss denounced public perception that Immigration officers are not allowed to engage during attacks stating that the service will do everything possible to protect its personnel.
“That is never true, then why are they holding the weapon. If they are not allowed to fire then why are they given. These are social media propaganda”. He clarified
He appealed to the public to provide any information that could aid in the investigation and possible arrest of the attackers.
“If they have any reliable information that will help us get to the bottom of this, they should not hesitate to give it to the police or the nearest GIS office. This is not going to deter us, we will continue to work hard to protect the borders of Ghana,”. He assured
The Comptroller-General and his team is expected to visit the various Immigration post in the North East Region.
