A Vice President aspirant of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and Editor-in-Chief of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Rebecca Ekpe, says she is well-positioned to serve as the Association’s next Vice President. She noted that, over the years, she has actively contributed to media development, championed freedom of expression, and consistently advocated for the rights and welfare of journalists to ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve.
Madam Ekpe made the point in an interview on the JoyNews AM Show, where she shared her vision for the Association to make it more vibrant. Madam Ekpe, who is also the current Public Affairs Officer of the GJA, said her decision to contest for the GJA Vice President position is driven by a personal desire to challenge herself to do more for Ghanaian journalists. She added that her campaign has so far been well received by members of the Association.
“I need to challenge myself and put my step forward and do more than I’m doing right now. In fact, to tell you what has been happening—I’ve had a lot of support, lots of calls—and that alone tells me that there are people watching.”
She said that, when given the nod, the welfare of journalists would be put on the front burner.
“For me, I think that the welfare of journalists has to do with the safety of journalists. It also has to do with overall wellbeing, which includes psychological and emotional wellbeing. These are issues that I think we need to bring to the front burner.”
The Vice Presidential aspirant added, “For me, I’m particularly also interested in professional development and training opportunities for our journalists. This is to ensure that journalists stay very current and are able to onboard new things.”
Madam Ekpe urged members of the Association to come out in their numbers on Election Day to vote massively for her.
“Come 30th of June, which is on Monday, the poll will open at 8 a.m. and will close at 3:00 p.m. I would like to appeal to those who are on the voters’ register to be on time and cast your vote. Remember to vote for number two on the ballot, Rebecca, number two for confidence, number two for media development, competence, and everything that you need within the media space.”
