The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Albert Dwumfour, has warned the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to caution and restrain its supporters ahead of the party’s upcoming flagbearership contest.
Mr. Dwumfour speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday January 6, 2026, said political competition must not be used as an excuse to harass, intimidate or attack journalists. He stressed that the NPP leadership must clearly show responsibility by making it known that any attack on journalists will not be tolerated.
The GJA President also called on journalists to practise responsible and ethical journalism. He urged media practitioners to focus on accurate, fair and balanced reporting that serves the public interest, promotes national development and helps maintain social cohesion.
According to Mr. Dwumfour, ethical journalism is key to building public trust and credibility in the media. He said the Association remains committed to enforcing strict professional standards and will continue to defend press freedom while holding journalists accountable.
He further announced that the National Executive of the GJA will continue its monthly media briefings and organise key activities throughout the year.
These include training programmes for journalists, advocacy on welfare issues, celebration of World Press Freedom Day, the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, and the organisation of the 30th GJA Media Awards.
Mr. Dwumfour appealed to journalists and partners of the Association to support these programmes to ensure their success and strengthen professionalism in the media industry.
