The Government of Ghana under the leadership of president John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the attempted arrest of a JoyNews reporter and the assault of an eyewitness by a soldier at a demolition site.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Government described the incident as “utterly unacceptable” and said such actions have no place in a democratic society.
The statement, signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said President John Dramani Mahama has directed an immediate investigation into the matter.
“The President reaffirms his strong commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists. A free press is crucial for accountability, transparency, and public engagement,” the statement said.

The Government has asked the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to ensure that the soldier involved is appropriately punished. It emphasized that disciplinary and punitive measures must be taken without delay to promote accountability and prevent similar actions in the future.
The statement also reassured all Ghanaians of the Government’s commitment to protect their rights and ensure their safety at all times.
