Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the John Mahama-led government will roll out performance targets for all Ghanaian ambassadors and diplomats to boost economic diplomacy.
He explained that the initiative will define the scope of work and expected outcomes for each diplomat, marking a historic first for the country.
The new policy direction, according to Mr Ablakwa, signals Ghana’s commitment to positioning itself as an attractive destination for foreign investors. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with ensuring that diplomatic missions abroad not only promote Ghana’s interests but also create a secure and welcoming environment for investment.
Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), Mr Ablakwa revealed that the framework will be officially launched on September 1, 2025, by President John Dramani Mahama, describing it as unprecedented in Ghana’s diplomatic history.
“On the first of September, the President will be launching, for the first time, key performance indicators (KPIs) for all ambassadors and diplomats from the Republic of Ghana. This has never happened in our history,” Mr Ablakwa said.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, the KPIs place economic diplomacy at the core of Ghana’s foreign policy.
Diplomats will now be tasked with driving investment, strengthening trade partnerships, and ensuring that their work directly improves the lives of Ghanaians.
“The President wants our diplomacy to make an impact. Our diplomacy must lead to improvements in the lives of people. Diplomacy must promote investment, and diplomacy must create a haven for all of those who invest in our country,” he stressed.
