Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari has announced the introduction of peak-hour bus services in Accra to help reduce traffic pressure and make evening travel easier for commuters. The initiative takes effect today, Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
At least eight buses will be deployed on each of four major routes between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. daily. The routes are Accra–Madina–Adenta, Accra–Achimota–Amasaman, Accra–Mallam–Kasoa, and the Accra–Tema Beach Road corridor.
Speaking to journalists, the Minister said the move is part of an interim measure to cushion the public, especially workers returning home after work. He explained that the Ministry is working with Intercity STC to use buses that return from long-distance journeys during the day.
“We are deploying buses starting today to support commuters during peak hours, so they can get home safely,” he said. Mr. Bukari added that the numbers will be increased later to serve more people.
He further warned commercial drivers who operate without joining a recognised transport union, stressing that the Ministry will clamp down on those who overcharge passengers and disregard transport regulations.
“We are embarking on a serious exercise to flush out drivers who do not belong to unions. You either belong to a union or you have no business on our roads,” he stated.
The intervention is expected to provide immediate relief to commuters who often struggle with congestion and high fares during rush hour in the capital.
