The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has announced measures to safeguard jobs and ensure operational continuity as the lease for the Damang Mine approaches its expiry date.

In a statement dated March 24, 2026, the ministry said the mining lease held by Abosso Goldfields Limited, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited, will expire on April 18, 2026, following a one-year extension.

The government emphasised that the Damang Mine remains a critical national asset, contributing significantly to Ghana’s gold production, export earnings and employment.

To maintain stability after the lease expires, the ministry said steps have been initiated to protect jobs, sustain service contracts and reassure stakeholders. These measures form part of a broader plan to secure a credible investor and operator through a competitive bidding process.

According to the ministry, the transition process is intended to ensure continued operations at the mine while promoting long-term Ghanaian-centred ownership and investment.

The government further assured that it remains committed to ensuring the mine continues to deliver lasting benefits to host communities and the country as a whole.

The ministry also reiterated its commitment to transparency and responsible management throughout the process, noting that the transition is expected to strengthen Ghana’s mining sector and align with the broader vision of sustainable, Ghanaian-driven economic growth.

The statement was signed by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.
