The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned all transport stations and drivers to follow the new 15% reduction in transport fares. The union says any driver or station that refuses to obey the directive will face strict punishment.
The General Secretary of the GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, said some drivers in the Ashanti Region did not reduce their fares on time because they received the information late. However, he made it clear that this excuse would not be accepted anymore.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Saturday, May 24, Mr. Abulbire said the GPRTU chairman had sent out another press release to remind all drivers and station managers. He warned that by the next day, any branch that still refuses to reduce fares will be punished.
“One of the punishments drivers fear most is being stopped from loading passengers. We will use that method to ensure everyone obeys,” he said.
The government introduced the 15% fare cut after fuel prices went down. Some drivers have followed the new prices, but others are still charging the old fares, saying their operating costs are too high.
The GPRTU insists that all drivers must follow the new rule to help passengers benefit from lower fuel prices.
