The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has issued an official statement in response to a video circulating on social media in which some visiting Black Americans claim they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals alleged to be police officers.
According to the GTA, both the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have already commenced full-scale investigations into the matter. The agencies, the statement noted, are treating the situation with the urgency and seriousness it deserves, and updates will be provided upon the conclusion of their work.
Reassuring the thousands of visitors expected in the country for the December in GH festivities, the GTA emphasized that Ghana remains a safe and trusted destination. The Authority highlighted that national security systems, in collaboration with law enforcement and tourism partners, have been strengthened to ensure the safety, comfort, and peace of mind of all holidaymakers.
The GTA further urged the public to remain calm and allow security agencies to conduct their investigations without interference. Visitors in need of assistance or seeking clarification are encouraged to contact the Authority through its dedicated hotlines: 0579 579 019 or 030 700 7100, or via WhatsApp on 0546 352 240.
“Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the statement concluded.
The release was signed by Bright Asempa Tsadidey, Director of Corporate Affairs, on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer.
