The Circuit Court 11 in Accra, presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, has remanded the Gyaasehene of Gomoa Fete in the Central Region, Nana Kofi Baah I, and one other person into police custody for allegedly stealing a KIA Forte valued at GHS 200,000 belonging to car dealer Hazel Yamoah Kyei.
The two, acting together with a third person, are alleged to have disposed of the vehicle after purportedly renting it for two days from the complainant. The accused persons, Nana Abeka Anderson and Nana Kofi Baah I, are also under investigation for a similar offence and are currently in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters in Accra. The third suspect, identified only as Yakubu, is on the run.
The first two accused have been charged with stealing and forgery of documents.
According to the prosecution, the complainant, Hazel Yamoah Kyei, is a car rental manager residing at New Bortianor. The first accused, Nana Abeka Anderson, 37, an IT technician living in North Kaneshie, allegedly contacted the complainant on 10 March 2025 to rent a KIA Forte for two days, requesting that it be delivered to his residence in Haatso, Accra.
After paying for the rental, Anderson is said to have provided photocopies of a Ghana Card and driver’s licence, both in the name of “Essel Kofi Elvis” but bearing his photograph.
When the rental period expired on March 13, 2025, the complainant tried to contact Anderson but his phone was switched off. A check on the vehicle’s tracking device revealed it had been disabled. The matter was reported to the police on 14 March 2025.
During investigations, the Accra Regional CID learned that Anderson had been arrested in connection with a similar case at the CID Headquarters. Upon questioning, he allegedly admitted renting the vehicle and failing to return it, naming Nana Kofi Baah I as his accomplice. Anderson claimed he handed the car to the Gyaasehene at Fete Kakraba in the Central Region.
The second accused was subsequently arrested and allegedly confirmed receiving the vehicle from Anderson. The pair reportedly handed the car over to Yakubu, who paid them GHS 16,000, which they shared.
Checks with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) confirmed that the identification documents provided by Anderson were fake.
Police say the accused are also linked to another case involving four recovered vehicles and have not assisted in retrieving the KIA Forte in this matter.
The case has been adjourned to 21 August 2025 for continuation.
