Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has described the recent military helicopter crash that killed eight people, including senior government officials and military officers, as a painful loss for the entire nation.

Speaking at a flower-laying ceremony in honour of the victims on Friday, 8 August 2025, Dr Bawumia said the tragedy is a national issue that goes beyond politics and must unite all Ghanaians in grief.

“This is a national tragedy. This morning I visited three of the deceased families and will continue tomorrow. I extend my condolences to the government, President John Dramani Mahama, the bereaved families, and the Ghana Armed Forces, who have lost gallant soldiers,” he said.

Dr Bawumia stressed that Ghana has lost “a tremendous amount” from the incident and assured that the New Patriotic Party will fully participate in all national mourning activities.

The crash happened in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, claiming the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice-Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot Flying Officer Twum Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo.
