The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), Dr. Rashid Tanko Computer, has assured Ghanaians that the controversial Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462 will be repealed once Parliament resumes from recess.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, Dr. Tanko emphasized that the repeal is a firm promise the NDC made during the 2024 elections campaign and the government is fully prepared to carry it out.
“We are just waiting for Parliament to return. The bill is ready. The Attorney General has completed all the necessary work, and as soon as Parliament is back, the process to repeal LI 2462 will begin,” Dr. Tanko said.
LI 2462, which regulates mining activities in forest reserves, has faced strong criticism from environmental activists and the public. The NDC, while campaigning, vowed to repeal the law, arguing that it allows harmful mining in protected areas.
Dr. Tanko acknowledged that some legal experts suggested amending the law instead of a full repeal, but the party insisted on fulfilling its original promise.
“We said we would repeal it, not amend it. After the repeal, if needed, we can introduce a new law. But for now, we are committed to removing LI 2462 completely,” he added.
He also confirmed that the Cabinet has reviewed and approved the decision, and the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi has publicly supported the move.
Dr. Tanko assured the public that the NDC remains committed to delivering on its promises, describing this repeal as part of broader efforts to protect Ghana’s environment and forest reserves.
