The Majority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned the destruction of a culturally significant statue in Bawku by some military personnel.
In a press release dated July 14, 2025, Mr Ayariga described the act as “unacceptable” and called on the senior leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces to urgently investigate the matter.
The statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, was reportedly destroyed on Sunday, July 13, during a military operation in the area.
Mr. Ayariga did not only condemn the destruction of the statue, but also spoke out against the alleged military brutality that occurred on the same day. He further expressed concern about a violent gun attack on a vehicle escorted by soldiers, reportedly carried out by unknown youth.
In his statement, the MP urged the youth in Kusaug to remain calm as government works to uncover those responsible and investigate possible infiltration of the military by individuals seeking to destabilize Bawku for political purposes.
”I however appeal to the Kusasis youth to calm down as Government takes urgent steps to investigate the infiltrations into the ranks of the military by elements who seek to politicize and further destabilize the situation in Bawku,” he said.
Hon. Ayariga also extended his condolences to the families of victims affected by the violence and those who suffered during the military operations.
He urged authorities to take firm action to restore peace and stability in Bawku.
