The President, John Dramani Mahama, has announced that five new modern market centers will be built in key districts of the Bono Region. He made the promise during his “Thank You” tour in Sunyani on Friday, May 30, 2025.

President Mahama said the project is part of the NDC’s Market Enhancement Plan, led by Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. He confirmed that Sunyani is one of the selected locations for the new markets.

“These markets will have clean water, proper sanitation, security, daycare centres, and digital infrastructure. They are designed to support our mothers and sisters who trade in these markets,” he explained.

He also spoke about a regional industrialisation plan focused on light manufacturing and agro-processing. This, he said, connects to the NDC’s 24-Hour Economy Initiative, which aims to create jobs, grow local businesses, and improve productivity.

Addressing traditional leaders and residents of Sunyani, Mahama said the NDC believes in inclusive governance. “We see our chiefs as key partners in development, not just custodians of tradition,” he said.

He pledged to support the Regional House of Chiefs by increasing funding for traditional councils and involving chiefs more in local governance—especially in environmental protection and sanitation.

President Mahama also highlighted environmental challenges in the region, such as deforestation, water shortages, and land degradation. He promised to work with communities to plant trees, protect water sources, and improve access to clean water in smaller towns.

“Our plan includes afforestation and climate-smart agriculture to help restore our environment,” he stated
