President John Dramani Mahama says he never believed the fight against illegal mining, also known as galamsey, could be won in just four months.
Speaking at the May Day parade at Black Star Square on May 1, 2025, President Mahama described tackling galamsey as a difficult task that requires time, effort, and persistence.
“I did not kid myself that when I come into office, I will win that fight in four months. Yet we will not give up,” he stated.
He praised the Ghana Armed Forces and other security agencies for their hard work and progress in the fight against illegal mining. President Mahama said their efforts are helping to stop companies and individuals from destroying forests and polluting water bodies.
“Our brave men in uniform are doing their best, and we will keep fighting to protect our land and water,” he said.
President Mahama ended his speech by pledging continued commitment to the cause.
“When it comes to the fight against galamsey, I say Aluta Continua — the struggle continues,” he declared.
