President John Dramani Mahama has removed Anne Sansa Daly from the Board of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) after concerns were raised about her not having a valid medical licence to practise in Ghana.
A statement from the Office of the President announced that Professor Dr (Med) Ernest Yorke has been nominated to replace her, effective immediately. The relevant authorities have been asked to ensure he is sworn in without delay.
Although the official statement did not give reasons for Daly’s removal, sources say the decision followed pressure from both the public and medical professionals. Many questioned her role on the NHIA Board, arguing that she should not represent the medical profession without a valid licence.
Stakeholders in the health sector also raised doubts about her qualifications and whether she was fit to serve on the board of such an important health institution.
Professor Yorke, a respected physician and former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Medical Association, has been praised as a strong and capable replacement. He currently serves as Vice President of the Association.
