The President, John Dramani Mahama, says his government is actively working to ensure that renewable energy makes up at least 30 per cent of Ghana’s national energy mix as part of efforts to reduce costs and protect the environment.

Delivering his New Year message at the Presidency in Accra on Thursday, January 1, 2026, President Mahama said the move forms part of a broader national reset aimed at building a sustainable and resilient economy by 2026. He stressed that expanding the use of renewable energy will help Ghana reduce its dependence on expensive power sources while safeguarding the environment.

The President outlined other key priorities of his administration, including continued digitalisation of schools to ensure that every classroom is equipped with tools for 21st-century learning. He said every child in Ghana deserves access to world-class education, regardless of background.

On healthcare, President Mahama announced that the government will operationalise universal health coverage through a free primary healthcare programme. He said this will ensure that no Ghanaian is denied medical care because of an inability to pay, with support from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, especially for people suffering from non-communicable diseases.

President Mahama also reiterated his commitment to transforming Ghana’s agricultural sector from subsistence farming into a thriving commercial industry. He said this will be achieved through mechanisation, value addition, and improved market access to make the country more self-sufficient.

In the area of housing, the President said the government will deliver affordable social housing through public-private partnerships to help address the country’s housing deficit.

He further pledged to intensify the fight against corruption, stressing that there will be no sacred cows. According to him, every cedi belongs to the people and must be accounted for.

President Mahama said his administration will also implement recommendations of the Constitutional Review Committee to strengthen the 1992 Constitution and deepen Ghana’s democracy.

Calling for national unity, he reminded Ghanaians that governments do not build nations alone and urged citizens, especially the youth, to take ownership of the national development agenda. “You are not the leaders of tomorrow; you are the leaders of today,” he said.

The President encouraged young people to innovate, create, and actively participate in building the Ghana envisioned for the future, as the country enters 2026 with renewed hope and determination.
