President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government will begin a major road infrastructure programme in 2026, constructing 10 kilometers of roads, drains, and pavements in 166 constituencies each year.
Speaking at the relaunch of National Sanitation Day at the Institute of Local Government Studies in Accra, President Mahama explained that the initiative will be implemented in phases and tied to sanitation performance.
“And so from next year, we’ll choose the best districts, but we have the 10 kilometers per constituency program, and we’re starting with 166 constituencies. And so every year, we’ll do 10 kilometers of roads and drains and pavements so that we can improve the general aesthetics of your districts,” President Mahama stated.

He clarified that the number of constituencies per district will influence the selection, adding:
“Some districts have two constituencies, others have one. And so we’ll choose 166, but it will also depend on your responsiveness in terms of sanitation and all that.”
“What is the use of rehabilitating roads and building drains only to find them littered with garbage? This initiative will encourage districts to keep their surroundings clean,” he emphasized.

The programme, he added, will be rolled out in phases, covering 166 constituencies each year until all 275 constituencies benefit.
The President linked the road project to his flagship 24-hour economy plan, noting that sanitation services such as refuse collection and cesspit emptying will be moved to nighttime to reduce traffic congestion and public nuisance.
