President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to meet with the Chief Justice, Attorney General, and other key officials on Thursday, October 9, 2025, to discuss lasting solutions to the reckless misuse of public funds in Ghana.
The meeting comes after repeated concerns raised in the Auditor-General’s reports, which have exposed several cases of financial irregularities across public institutions.
Speaking at the 12th Annual Conference of Chairpersons of Governing Boards and Chief Executives of Public Services in Ho, President Mahama expressed disappointment over the continued mismanagement of state resources citing his personal observation of the current hearing at Public Accounts Committee describing the poor level of accountability as pathetic.
“I’ve been watching the Public Accounts Committee, and it’s so pathetic. Every year, we gather and hear the same reckless misuse of public funds,” he lamented.
The President called for a faster and more effective legal process to punish those found guilty of financial misconduct. He stressed that unless people are held accountable, the cycle of corruption and waste will continue.
According to the President, the financial losses identified by the Auditor-General could have been used to drive national development if properly managed.
President Mahama also criticised the poor enforcement of constitutional requirements for Parliament to establish a committee to monitor the Auditor-General’s findings. He said the current Audit Report Implementation Committees (ARICs) are not working effectively.
The president also indicated that people must be held to account for the persistent misuse of public fund to serve as deterrent to others there won’t be a change.
“Until people know they will be held responsible for misusing public resources, nothing will change,” he said.
