The President, John Dramani Mahama, has emphasised that Ghana’s goal of building a competitive and sustainable vegetable industry will be focused on domestic production.

“We aim to build a competitive and sustainable vegetable industry anchored firmly on our own domestic production,” he said.

Speaking at the launch of the Vegetable Development Project in Kukuom in the Ahafo Region, President Mahama highlighted plans to expand large-scale production of tomatoes, onions, and peppers using improved seed varieties.

The project, according to him, aims to boost Ghana’s vegetable production by providing farmers with improved seeds, organic fertilizers, agronomic training, and digital advisory services. President Mahama noted that farmers involved in the project have already begun receiving these inputs, enhancing their capacity to produce high-quality vegetables.

The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities, particularly for young people, women, and persons with disability, offering dignified and predictable jobs. President Mahama emphasized the project’s potential to contribute to Ghana’s economic development and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

He also added that though the project will position the Ahafo Region as a major contributor to the national vegetable supply chain, it will also be replicated in many other parts of the country, especially in the north due to the severe water crisis there.

The project launch was attended by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, stakeholders from the agricultural sector, farmers, and government officials, highlighting the collaborative effort to drive Ghana’s agricultural development.
