The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), Ghana, has called on the government and all stakeholders in labour, to put in place policies that would ameliorate the prevailing high cost of living, and bring economic relief to the working class and Ghanaians in general. In a May Day message, General Secretary of the Union, Morgan Ayawine, expressed appreciation to workers for their selflessness even in the face of challenges.
“I doff my hat to you, gallant workers of Ghana, for your unflinching resilience over the past years, in the face of daunting economic difficulties, and for tenaciously holding the fort in spite of excruciating economic hardship you have been enduring, where the “take-home” pay of some of you could hardly take you to the doorstep of your workplace, let alone take you home for you and your families to live dignified lives”
He said the commemoration of May Day is an opportunity for workers to realize the essence of time, and the need to render service for economic growth and development of Ghana, adding such should be done consciously to meet timelines to achieve set targets.
Workers and Trade Unions
The statement acknowledges the importance for workers to seize the opportunities available to fully realize the purpose of trade unions and to build lasting capacity that can endure over time.
“It is always important to leverage the opportunity we have as workers, for the full realization of the purpose of trade union existence and capacity building that can stand the test of time”
It added employers must also treat workers fairly in accordance with established laws.
“Equally, employers are obligated to “play the game by the rule” so to speak, and ensure that workers are treated fairly in accordance with the dictates of the Collective Agreement and the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) and not be short-changed. Workers must be given their fair share of the wealth they have contributed in creating, in terms of optimum wages/salaries and other benefits they are entitled to, without foot-dragging or any scheming to deprive them of what is rightfully due them”
Mr. Ayawine, said the lighting of the “Perpetual Flame” over the years is a constant reminder to workers, of the sacrifice of forebears who spilled their blood to make it possible for workers to enjoy industrial democracy that allows labour union uphold it, and continue to accentuate the rights of workers.
He urged workers to work harder to sustain work institutions and build a strong economy that would ensure the acceleration of the country’s development.
About May Day
May Day which is observed annually on May one, is internationally recognised as a day to celebrate and acknowledge the efforts and achievements of workers. In Ghana, the day is marked with nationwide parades, speeches from labour leaders and government officials, and reflections on labour rights and conditions.
The celebration serves as a moment of solidarity among workers and a reminder of the struggles that have shaped the modern labour movement. It is also a platform for trade unions to engage with the government on matters concerning wages, job security, and workplace safety.
