Medical Officer at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Kwadwo Adomako Tannor, is urging Ghanaians to make regular medical checkups a part of their lifestyle to help curb the growing cases of diabetes and hypertension.

Speaking to GBC News at the “Barachel Goes Community” outreach, Dr. Tannor warned that many residents screened showed early signs of the two conditions, describing them as “quiet but dangerous when left untreated.” According to him, consistent screening and simple lifestyle adjustments remain the most effective ways to prevent long-term complications.

The outreach programme was organised by the Barachel Seventh-Day Adventist Church, located at Lartebiokorshie under the Accra City Conference (ACC), as part of activities marking its 10th Anniversary. Established in February 2015, the church continues to make community service a central part of its mission.

Inspired by Matthew 25, the church emphasizes caring for the needy, visiting the sick, and demonstrating God’s love through practical acts of kindness. Over the years, Barachel SDA has become known for initiatives that combine medical screening, health education, counselling, and evangelism to promote both physical and spiritual well-being.

Head Pastor of the Church, Pastor Francis Nana Takyi, said the outreach reflects the church’s commitment to holistic ministry.

“We cannot preach the Gospel without caring for the physical needs of the people. This is what Matthew 25 calls us to do,” he told GBC News.

Some residents who benefited from the free screening expressed appreciation for the initiative.

A resident, Mrs. Naana Osei-Tutu Adu, said the exercise has encouraged her to take her health more seriously. He added “I didn’t know my blood pressure was rising. I’m grateful because now I can take steps to control it.”

A resident of Lartebiokorshie, Mr. Daniel Bempah, noted that the advice he received will guide him to adopt healthier habits.  “The nurses really educated us. I’ve learnt a lot about eating well and checking my sugar levels.”

And finally, Madam Esi Adjeley, a mother of three, commended the church for thinking about the community.
“They prayed with us, screened us, and even gave us food. It’s a blessing.”

The programme also featured prayer support, Christian literature distribution, and feeding, all aimed at strengthening both the spiritual and physical health of participants.

The Barachel SDA Church will climax its 10-year anniversary celebration on December 13, 2025.
